Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in several interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation after England were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, he revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special going into this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term place in the side, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There's no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
