The White House confirmed the initiation of government employee terminations on Friday, making good on earlier warnings linked to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Early Information

Russell Vought wrote on social media that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the government’s process for terminating staff.

While the official provided no details on which agencies were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that notices had been issued within that agency. Furthermore, a DHS spokesperson noted that staff reductions would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that employees at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Union leaders cautions that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on public services used by the public and pledged to contest the actions in the legal system.
