The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Track

This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure by Critical Role, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It features our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at several heart-wrenching backstories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.

All in all, the intro looks stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the song choice.

The intro employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar song created by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the official score of the same name, the second release put out by the production company's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental choice, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will love its inclusion.

Personally, The Mighty Nein's intro fails to capture the hype and excitement that was part of the second campaign's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by singer-songwriter the artist, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in that year, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my phone. This track that excites you before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.

The Mighty Nein's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.

Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the series will have some surprises and variations from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its intro appears as among these.

The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. If you can't wait until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the characters of the second series, the original episodes are available on the audio platform and the video site.
