Pope Strengthens Status to England Cricket's No 3 Spot with Strong 90 Against Lions

It's hard to know how much of England's practice game will be remotely relevant when their Ashes contest kicks off a short distance away at Perth Stadium on the coming Friday – a brief gap in space or time but light years away in import and environment – but if it achieved only enhancing Pope's confidence, that alone has made the endeavor beneficial.

England's number three batsman – this fact is undoubtedly absolutely clear – followed his initial innings ton by notching a further 90 in the follow-up innings, and the most notable was less about the quantity of runs but the way in which they were scored. On occasion the 27-year-old seemed commanding, smashing a twelve boundaries and a two of sixes, connecting with the ball sweetly but with fierce determination.

It was only a friendly versus a England Lions team that employed a total of 11 pitchers across a game held in before a handful of onlookers in a public park, but it was nevertheless very praiseworthy. To note, the England team, set a target of 202 following the Lions ended their second innings on 251 for six, won by five wickets in hand once Jamie Smith sped the team past the winning target with a flurry of fours and sixes.

Joe Root added another 31 points but was not hugely impressive during England's practice.

Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett, the other two big first-innings' successes, both fell short in the second knock, while Joe Root added additional points – 31 on this instance – but was not enormously more convincing, before being puzzled and duly out by Jacks. Harry Brook suffered an identical end a little later.

Shoaib Bashir – who finished the match having delivered 12 overs for both teams – will have encountered part of the hitting he bowled to rather hostile. His opening six deliveries against the Lions went for 56, with McKinney taking advantage to bowling that if not exactly wayward was certainly far from threatening.

At the end the sixth spell of that period, England's remaining three pitchers had conceded roughly the equivalent amount of points – 57 – from 15, though Bashir grew a somewhat less leaky as time passed, giving up 27 from his final six. He secured one dismissal, making a smart, low-down grab, falling to his right, to finish Bethell's batting stint for 70, from 80 balls.

Bethell, making up for managing only a small score in the initial innings, was one of three half-centurions in the Lions team's top order. McKinney's performances from opener were more consistent than those from their No 3: he made 66 in their initial knock and scored 68 in their second innings, using 61 deliveries for his fifty, with five and two sixes, each from Bashir's deliveries. Bethell reached 68 prior to a poor shot to Stokes at cover position, who took a bending grab at low down.

Cox displayed similar consistency, and built on his first-innings 53 with an additional 57, at slightly more than a run per delivery. He played a few remarkably elegant shots during his innings, such as a straight hit and a pull from successive Carse deliveries to achieve his fifty.

Following his absence from the initial day of this game with a illness and contributed merely the smallest of efforts to the follow-up, Brydon Carse delivered brilliantly when finally given the chance, with McKinney and Jordan Cox among his three dismissals.
