EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In other legal developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to cut security grants to states which resist specific federal immigration rules. The judge stated the action was “a further instance” of linking government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to a major US city ahead of the new year, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, after signing a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known cultural institution in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with historical international actions.
