2K Games has appointed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to direct the development team at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the anticipated third-person action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Management Shift Comes After Poor Response
Brinkman assumes the role of studio head at the development studio following the exit of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to the game's lackluster initial reveal last autumn.
On Wednesday, 2K president a key figure notified employees about this strategic move through an internal memo, which stressed that playtesting had shown the necessity for a clearer game identity.
Ismailer expressed that the team is now refining the project with a refreshed vision, aiming to satisfy gamer demands.
A Pattern of Strategic Recruitment
This announcement mirrors a similar step taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to work on the BioShock development group.
Below is the full message from the president's announcement:
Dear Team—
I know you all just wrapped up your gathering - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the positive developments. Previously I sent you all a message, I expressed the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative creators we have had the pleasure to collaborate with - and we’re excited for that collaboration to continue.”
Through your commitment and flexibility, especially over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.
The player input from last fall’s the game playtest was informative. It affirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had work to do. It revealed the necessity for a clearer identity.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve advanced. You embraced the feedback to mind and overhauled Project ETHOS with a refreshed vision - one that’s positioned to deliver on its ambition to our players.
The trust in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To further the outstanding development you’ve made, I am thrilled to announce the new hire as the incoming Studio Head of the team. Following a period of talks, he starts with us on Monday, October 20.
Ben’s guidance and experience in the PVP shooter field is considerable, having spent the recent years creating and overseeing some of the most popular franchises in the industry, including the acclaimed shooter, and lately, the battle royale hit.
Please join me in receiving him next week. We are all eager to persist witnessing the development of the game in the weeks to ahead.
The President
Experience of the New Leader

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the game's pitch reads. "Challenge the rivals with new abilities, risks, and obstacles that change every match. Do you safely extract with your collected items? Alternatively take a risk, put it on the line, and hope your team can secure victory? The option is up to you."
The game has not yet received an official release date or supported systems, but fans can expect more updates as creation continues.
